BREAKING: Shin Taeyong appointed Korean National Team manager

Technical Director Kim Hogon spoke to media a few minutes ago (2:15pm KST).

“The best person to fix Korean football right now is Shin Taeyong. We have appointed him the next manager of the Korean national team. His contract duration is of one year.”

This means that if Korea do qualify for the World Cup, Shin Taeyong, and not a foreign boss, will be in charge.

Kim made the announcement after a marathon session of the technical committee, with convened for over 4 hours.

“Shin Taeyong knows the current players of the national team better than anyone. He is an excellent communicator and will know how best to boost the team’s morale. He will be able to increase the cohesiveness of this very disorganized team.”

“I have full confidence that Shin Taeyong’s managership will guide this team to success in the two remaining qualifiers.”

“However, even if we finish the group in third place and enter the playoffs, we will stand by Shin as manager of the national team. There is no question,” said Kim, firmly.

The former Seongnam Ilwha player and manager won trophies galore during 12 prolific seasons as an attacking midfielder before winning the Asian Champions League in his first season in charge of his long-time club. In 2014, he was brought on as a caretaker after Hong Myungbo’s resignation, and led the side under two games against Venezuela and Uruguay. After falling out with Uli Stielike, he left for the U-23 national team to take 18 men to the Rio Olympics, where the squad fell short of a medal, before taking charge of the U-20 national team in Korea, when the squad fell against Portugal in the Round of 16.
