AFC Champions League Update

The 1st leg of the round of 16 were held last week. Pohang defeated Jeonbuk (in Jeonju) 2-1 to take back home. Jeonbuk will need to win by two goals if they want to advance. FC Seoul traveled to Japan to take on Kawasaki Frontale in their tie. Things looked good for the Japanese side, who were up 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining. But goals from Kim Chi-Woo and Yoon Il-Lok in the 83′ and 90′ respectively gave Seoul a crucial lead to defend at home (plus three huge away goals).

Return Legs (dates are local)

Pohang Steelers vs Jeonbuk Motors – 5/13 (Tues)
FC Seoul vs Kawasaki Frontale – 5/14 (Wed)

Other Koreans in AFC Champions League

  • It was a night to forget for Kim Jin-Hyeon, whose Cerezo Osaka side got blitzed by defending champions Guangzhou Evergrande 5-1 in Osaka. Cerezo will need a miracle in China if they want to proceed as not even a 4-0 win would be sufficient.
  • Kim Young-Gwon started as usual for Guangzhou.
  • Hwang Seok-Ho made a late substitute appearance for Sanfrecce Hiroshima as they defeated Western Sidney Wanderers 3-1 in Japan. A last minute goal by Shibasaki Kosei gave Sanfrecce some breathing room before they make the long trip down under.
  • Park Hyung-Jin was an unused sub for Sanfrecce in that game.
  • Lee Jung-Soo started (and played the whole game) for Al Sadd in the 0-0 draw with Foolad.
  • Kwak Tae-Hwi started for Al Hilal in their 1-0 away win over Bunyodkor.
  • Shin Hyung-Min started for Al Jazira in their 2-1 loss to Al Ain.

  1. Wish the coats had the KFA badge on them. Sending positive energy to family members who have lost their loved ones in the recent ferry disaster.

  2. one more comment, those are some dapper men for the KNT. goal scored for Korea on style points. On a more serious note – nice touch on wearing the commemoration ribbons – peace to the Sewol families.
