Conscription: the Rite of Passage Strangling Korean Football -January 2, 2014

Military Conscription – it may be the #1 problem that holds back the larger ambitions of the South Korean national football program as they struggle to compete with the likes of rising regional footballing powers like Japan. Without military exemption or deferment, many Korean footballers are not attracting attention of the world’s top flight football clubs. But 10 years after the epic 2002 World Cup run that inspired millions into the streets, how does Korea balance national security concerns and advance Korean football?  60+ years of a seemingly endless Cold War hangover muffles any constructive dialogue on the issue…though over the horizon, could there be a solution in sight?   Jae Chee contributing.

White Elephants Seldom Forget

A White Elephants Among White Elephants – September 18, 2015

In the backdrop of Korea’s 8-0 stomping of Laos in September, 4 year old Hwaseong Stadium was constructed in a haze of mystery. With no K-League team to anchor it in the middle of a distant Seoul suburb and no subway line to connect it, it sits empty as a monument to corruption and epic ineptitude in planning. It’s also part of the puzzling landscape in which massive World Cup stadiums dominate with limited interest from the surrounding communities in their football teams.

Steve Price wrote that piece for IBWM and is one of our newer Tavern contributors. He also his own blog, KLeaguefootball.com.

World Cup in LA: How second-generation Korean-Americans choose a team

Jae Chee has written a profile of the Korean squad in FIFA World Cup magazine. (The magazine is entirely on print – look for it at a news stand near you).

Jae was also interviewed by Irish radio station NewsTalk 106-108 FM on their football podcast.

Noonchi published my piece on how I came to go over the edge with Korea in 2002.

Jae has player profiles and a ‘Layman’s guide’ to Korea’s tactics on Noonchi.
