Korean Football Weekend Listings

European campaigns are winding down. All times are in US Eastern Standard Time / Korea Time. Broadcast TV is in the US, internet streaming should (wink wink nod nod) be available worldwide .

SATURDAY

Germany, Bayern Munich vs. Augsburg 9:30 a.m./10:30 pm   GolTV   Augsburg’s Ji Dong-Won will face what hopefully will be a relaxed Bayern squad – they need all the points they can get to fight out of relegation. And they are almost there, even with Fortuna Dusseldorf for a position within safety of the Bundesliga table, save for goal differential. Koo Ja-Cheol started training with Augsburg but is still expected to be listed as injured and not in the 18.

Germany, Gruether Furth vs Freiburg 9:30 am/10:30 pm  18 year old Wolfsburg loanee Park Jung-Bin has been impressive, but hasn’t scored a goal yet for relegated bound Furth.

Germany, Hoffenheim vs Hamburg 9:30 am/10:30pm  Son Heung-Min time. Is he headed to Borussia Dortmund and Champions League glory?  Questions will have to be sidelined for now as the 20 year old Hamburg forward must now concentrate on the game at hand.

MLS, Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Los Angeles Galaxy 7 p.m. Direct Kick, MLS Live

Lee Young-Pyo time for Vancouver.

SUNDAY

Switzerland, Basel vs Servette 7:45 am / 8:45 pm  Park Joo Ho’s Basel may have lost the Europa League semifinals against Chelsea last week, but they have the Super Swiss title and a Champions League qualifying spot to look forward to.

England, QPR vs. Newcastle 10 a.m /11 pm . foxsoccer2go.com (tape at 2 on Fox Soccer Plus). Park Ji-Sung actually was part of the starting XI for Redknapp’s doomed squad last weekend.  Who knows what Harry has in mind, and for most, the question might be ‘Who cares?’

England, Manchester United vs. Swansea City 11 a.m./12 am Monday    Fox Soccer, Fox Deportes.  Say what you will about Manchester United (Tavern owner is not a fan, especially of their American owners), but Sir Alex Ferguson will be always be remembered as a brilliant manager for the 27 years he’s helmed Man U. Korean football enthusiasts will not forget his rapport with Park Ji-Sung – giving Park his shot at proving himself and helping Park become one of the most decorated Korean footballers in history.  Sir Alex’s last game at Old Trafford will be an emotional one, the end of a grand era for Manchester United.

Ki Sung-Yeung may still be injured from a leg injury and not expected in the 18 man roster. Great time then to announce he is getting married to 32 year old actress Han Hye Jin (at age 24, Ki apparently didn’t heed the World’s Most Interesting Man’s advice regarding his catch and release policy involving cougars). They’ve been dating 4 months and apparently met on the set of Korean television show Healing Camp. Congratulations and more rounds of soju are in order, on the house!  Ki, we’ll try not to rib you too much about the age differential  —-or will we? I suspect the Korean press will not relent at the least, so the Tavern will be a place of refuge for you Ki, should you decide to drop by.

Portugal, Maritimo vs Guimaraes, 11 am/ 12 am Monday   Suk Hyun-Jun to the rescue?

Spain, Real Betis vs Celta Vigo, 11 am /12 am Monday  Park Chu-Young’s injury looks to be a break in his foot – he is out the rest of the season.
