Another weekend is upon us – this week’s feature match sees Bayer Leverkusen challenging the undefeated, defending German champions, Bayern Munich. Can Son shine in Bavaria?

Ji Dong-Won has apparently suffered a hitch in his quest for fitness – he is out of training and will not feature. It’s a pity, as this could have been a Korean derby, with Kim Jin-Su taking on last-place Dortmund – yes, last-place – and after a simply outstanding outing last weekend, I think we can all agree he will get the nod again this weekend. In an interview with Bild, Kim Jin-Su said he “loved the pressure” of the Bundesliga.

Status quo for Hong Jeong-Ho – defensive sub duty will likely meet him as Augsburg visit Cologne.

Also status quo for Lee Chung-Yong, and he’s expected to start thanks to his and Bolton’s good form. No word on whether or not he will extend his contract at Bolton – he’s been offered one. Honestly, I sort of expect him to stay at Bolton next season. Neil Lennon believes in him and LCY has always been quite loyal to BWFC – I just don’t see him making a move. Who knows, it could change if big clubs come calling, but if you asked me if he was moving in January, I’d give a pretty confident ‘no’.

Kim Bo-Kyung may make the bench after a good outing (Two assists) for the reserves. I’m not sure he’ll see the pitch though. For the umpteenth time – #FreeKimbo!

Yun Suk-Young face a tame Burnley and should be allowed more license to attack against the Clarets.

Son Heung-Min tackle Bayern Munich – will Roger Schmidt’s side be able topple the German greats? Also, Son lost his appeal to avoid a 3-game suspension in the DFB-Pokal, the cup tournament. Son was sent off in a game against a 4th-tier club for lashing out and kicking an opponent. Quite childish if it was intentional, which I think it was.

Ki and Swansea take on surprising West Ham. Remember, Ki scored midweek at the Liberty Stadium and hopefully he can work some his offensive magic with Leon Britton covering for the South Korean in his usual defensive, conservative role. Ki will start.

Park Joo-Ho got injured again last weekend and will probably be a game time decision. He did train with the team however. Koo, despite a horrendous miss against Schalke last weekend, will probably get the nod.

KPA’s in the Middle East

[table “” not found /]

Lekhwiya, Nam Tae-Hee’s team, already played. The game with Al-Ahli finished in a 2-2 draw.

All the games on a Friday morning (in EST) – anyone ready for a marathon of Middle Eastern football via creative sources?

Kickaround

  • The Tavern recorded two podcasts on the domestic season, one about the K-League Classic and the other on the K-League Challenge. Jae, Jinseok, Roy and myself recapped an exciting year of domestic football in Korea. The Classic podcast might have a disappointing audio quality due to our recording software going awry on us, but the Challenge podcast went well in terms of audio quality. Both a worth a listen, even for the casual K-League follower, when they come out.  It’s a Tavern – albeit a cyber one – and yes, I’m cyber-drinking underage, if such a thing exists – but let’s raise a toast – here’s to another fantastic season next year!
  • The FIFA Women’s World Cup draw will be held this Saturday at 12noon EST at the National Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Ontario. South Korea are in the draw along with 23 other nations. The WWC will take place next year across Canada – so keep your eyes peeled not only for the K-League podcasts but a post post-draw by me summarizing my quick thoughts on South Korea’s group and their chances for the 2015 WWC.
  • Evelyn mentioned in her post the players called up for Uli Stielike’s winter training camp – some controversial selections as Lee Yong-Jae gets a nod and Lee Seung-Gi gets snubbed. Go check out her midweek roundup for that.
  • Also check out Takeuchi’s transfer update.
  • And of course don’t forget to follow Jae’s (@ArmchairRegista), Roy’s (@Taeguk_Warrior), Takeuchi’s (@Takeuchee) and my (@korfan12) twitter accounts. We usually do a good job about tweeting results and notable KPA and Korean football moments as they happen. United are playing Monday so I will spare everyone from my MUFC tweets this weekend. Heh.

That’s all I’ve got for y’all on this Thursday evening – wishing everyone a good night (or another time of day) from a chilly Tavern Studio QC. Peace and jalgayo.

  1. Thank you Tim. Appreciate this. LCY is the most talented player in the cola right now. I can’t see how that escapes the scouts. Im more optimistic that he’s going to get some offers before the window closes. Loyalty is great and all. We all covet it. But this has been played out. He needs to start making decisions for himself while he’s young. Signing another contract with Bolton will be crushing imo. He’s way too good to be stuck with Bolton the rest of his prime. Ill be sorely disappointed.

Regarding Ki, it will be most interesting to me who Monk decides to go with this Sunday. Shelvy or Leon. Hopefully Ki’s performance last Sat registered with Monk. I can’t see how it didnt.
