Lady Taeguk Warriors face off against China / Swansea in action today

January 16, 2013

The Women’s South Korean national team upset Canada on Monday 3-1 in the International Women’s Football Tournament in Yongchuan China. The last day of the tournament will conclude with the team squaring off against host China today. Norway has already won the tournament, having previously beaten South Korea and China and today drawing with Canada.

Yesterday, Park Ji-Sung and Lee Chung-Yong were in action for their clubs in FA Cup replays. QPR eeked out a 1-0 win over West Bromich Albion. Park was part of an aggressive QPR offense. Harry Rednapp had reasons to be happy: not only did they advance in the FA Cup, they confirmed signing Loïc Rémy from Marseille for £8m AND were rounding the corner for Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila, a £7m deal if it goes through. Meanwhile, Lee Chung-Yong played 20 minutes in Bolton’s 2-0 upset against Sunderland. Marvin Sordell was the hero for the Wanderers, converting a penalty kick and adding a 2nd goal. Update: I had neglected to add a remarkable subplot: the return of Stuart Holden to Bolton’s lineup. He, like Lee, subbed in the 2nd half of the match. Like Lee, Stuart suffered a horrific injury and rehabed in a long recovery; however no one would have imagined the recovery would be as long and painful as the one Stuart endured. In a season like the one Bolton went through last year, with Lee, Holden out with season ending injuries and Muamba nearly dying on the pitch, it was an emotional moment for Bolton supporters to see Stuart finally make it back to the pitch in this symbolic victory for the Wanderers.

There’s a replay of the FA Cup 3rd round battle with Swansea visiting Arsenal, going at it this afternoon at 2:30 pm EST. In the US, the game will be aired on Fox Soccer on tape delay starting at 5pm. Ki Sung-Yeung tentatively is not expected to start, though official lineups haven’t been announced yet this morning.  Michael Ladrup’s been known to sub in Ki in the 2nd half in matches where he doesn’t start.

Update: Santiago Perez via twitter just announced the Celta Vigo vs Coruxo exhibition match has been postponed due to inclement weather. It will be rescheduled to next week.

Finally, Santiago Perez has reported on Rainmaker18.com that Park Chu-Young will start for Celta Vigo in an exhibition match today, described as a sort of ’90 minute training session’. They’ll be playing against Coruxo, a 3rd tier Spanish team that’s done quite well in their division this season. Paco Herrera will be watching closely to see Park’s goal scoring form, given the possibility Celta’s leading goal scorer, Iago Aspas, may be leaving in the near future. He’s been linked to several teams in the Premier League, but a deal has not materialized at present.
