Boxing Day Review + Weekend Listings

Boxing Day offered some good games, and there are more this weekend. Still only in England though.

  • Positive: Ki remains a quality player for the Black Cats. Ki not only won the penalty, but coolly converted it as well. Despite the win, Sunderland remain at the foot of the table, but are much closer to getting out. Just three points plus a couple goals short of safety.
  • Positive: Yoon Suk-Young made his return to competitive action. Doncaster got roasted 3-0 by Ipswich, but it’s good to see Yoon made it back on the pitch.
  • Negative: Another late sub appearance for Kim Bo-Kyung. After receiving much praise in the early goings, Kim seems to be increasingly marginalized.

The one to watch this weekend is certainly the Cardiff-Sunderland match. Beyond being a possible Kim Bo-Kyung vs Ki Sung-Yueng match, it’s one of those proverbial “six-pointers” as Cardiff are hovering just above the relegation zone, while Sunderland look to take another step closer to safety. For those watching the whole Malky Mackay situation, rumors resurfaced that he could yet get the sack after Cardiff were shallacked 3-0 by Southampton on Boxing Day. A loss to bottom Sunderland could be the excuse that Tan wants.

Other Stuff

  • Ryu Seung-Woo is back in Korea getting ready to meet up with Bayer Leverkusen after he officially moves in January. Ryu spoke with Ilgan Sports. The interview, while interesting, does not reveal anything particularly new.
  • For those who like the K League, some big news broke yesterday when FC Seoul and Chinese side Jiangsu Sainty announced that the Montenegrin striker would leave the capital club after six years. Rumors are that Seoul will receive a transfer fee of about $4 million.
  • Finally, more K League stuff. Another coaching change was made in the last week. Newly reformed Seongnam FC announced they have parted ways with Ahn Ik-Soo after one year, and have brought back Park Jong-Hwan, who managed the team (as Ilhwa Chunma) from 1988-1996. During that time Ilhwa Chunma won the K League three times as well as the AFC Champions League. Park also served as national team manager for several years.
