Capital One Cup & BVB faces Bayern – Midweek Listings, August 12-13

As we eagerly await the start of the Bundesliga and Premier League, there are 3 games featuring Korean Players Abroad who we track on a regular basis. In England, it’s the first round of the Capital One Cup, and over in Germany, it’s the DFL Supercup. The one-off pre-season tie features defending German double winners Bayern Munich and the team who was playing second fiddle to them all season, Borussia Dortmund.

Lee Chung-Yong and Bolton had a less-than-stellar start to their Championship campaign with a crushing 3-0 defeat to Watford. Chungy had a pair of fantastic chances, including one at the death, but couldn’t convert. Bury FC is a fourth tier side, plying their trade in the Football League Two, based in Greater Manchester. Seeing that Lee is a key member of the Wanderers starting XI, I wouldn’t expect Dougie Freedman to play him in a tie that Bolton should be able to win.

Kim Bo-Kyung was on the bench when Cardiff City made their Championship return with a 1-1 draw against Blackburn. Kimbo had a minor injury but seems to have recovered, with Ole Gunnar Solksjaer confirming that the Korean midfielder will play in their Capital One Cup match at 3rd tier Coventry City.

As the Bundesliga season kickoff fast approaches, we have one more pre-season tradition to do – it’s the DFL Supercup. The match usually pits the defending Bundesliga champ against the holders of Germany’s Cup tournament, the DFB-Pokal. Bayern Munich enter as winners of the German double, whilst Borussia Dortmund, and their new signing, Ji Dong-Won, will participate seeing that they finished runners-up to Bayern in both of those tournaments. (Thanks to mshinny89 for the correction on this.) I’d think that Ji will come on as a sub if he’s needed.

In a closing note, the South Korean U-20 Women enter their final game of the group stage at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada with a single point. They drew 1-1 with England in their opening game at Moncton Stadium, with Lee So-Dam having converted a penalty before conceding to the English later on in the game. Their second game against Nigeria had a disastrous start, with the Taegeuk Nangja U-20 conceding in the 1st minute. They never recovered, falling 2-1. The side enter the final group game needing a win against Mexico combined and hoping that England do not win their final game against Nigeria. Weirdly, this group has had three 1-1 draws.

The game goes at 8pm EDT this Wednesday in the National Soccer Stadium, aka BMO Field, in Toronto. Daehanminguk Fighting!
