Korean Footballers Abroad Weekend Listing 1.21 + U23 AFC Championship Quarterfinals

What up, got a bit of a upset to relay to you – we’ll get to that in a moment. Meanwhile it’s Korea’s turn to the mic, they battle Malaysia in a few hours. First, let’s go to Korean Footballers Abroad

Weekend Preview Jan 20th and Midweek Recap Jan 17th

Some ugliness in France midweek for the KPAs, with Dijon getting spanked 8-0 and Suk going down with injury.

Lee Seung Woo — Probably in squad, we’ll see if there’s a change with winter camp but I don’t expect one.

Ji Dong Won — Limited in training and we’ll see if that means if he’s out of squad again this weekend with that knee injury.

Koo Ja Cheol — He should start but at which position? Probably starting off on the right again to start.

Lee Chung Yong — With no new transfers, LCY will probably get to warm the bench.

Kwon Chang Hoon — What a beating. I guess I’m glad I didn’t watch but must be demoralizing even if against PSG. With a short week, and KCH playing 90 midweek, maybe ODO changes things around a bit but KCH should be in the squad.

Suk Hyun Jun — Out with a severe ankle sprain as he was on the bench to start and got injured ten minutes or so after being subbed in… it remains to be seen how long he’s out for.

Son Heung Min — Don’t think Poch is going to take his hot hand off, so Son should start.

Ki Sung Yueng — Played 20 in the cup match win. Reports (since not televised) seem that he had a few good touches but also a bad pass leading to an opposition opportunity. With that rest, I expect Ki to start but it will be a tough task against a dangerous Liverpool side.

There you have it, thanks again to Korean Footballers Abroad.  Side Note: Hwang Chang-Hee (RB Salzburg), Suk Hyun-Jun (Troyes) and Ji Dong-Won (Augsburg) are injured and will not be in the game day squad this weekend for their clubs.

AFC U23 Championship

Quarterfinals time. Japan advanced out of their group with relative ease but you could sense an upset in the air as they took on Uzbekistan. And what an upset it was…

A 4:0 shellacking; not many would have seen that coming. Pressure brought on by Uzbekistan hemmed Japan in the back and it paid off dividends as deep defensive errors were capitalized by Uzbek forwards, resulting in a goal bonanza.  Yakhshiboev looked especially dangerous and his skillful goals wrecked Japan’s defense, his well deserved brace something to keep an eye on. That’s because the winner of Korea/Malaysia, today at 3am US EST / 5 pm Korean time will face Uzbekistan in the semifinals.
