Midweek Roundup 04/09: Hoffenheim and Leverkusen out of DFK Pokal [Update 1.0]

An extension to Roy’s previous post on the Asian Champions League and our players in Europe.

Hoffenheim vs Dortmund (DFK Pokal):

The game ends as a 2-3 loss for Hoffenheim as Dortmund go through the semi-finals of the DFK Pokal. Kim Jin-Su was subbed on at the 61’ for Toljan and remained composed on defense through the rest of the match…

Bayer Leverkusen vs Bayern Munich (DFK Pokal):

This match did not feature Son Heung-Min. The two sides faced off in a penalty shootout where Munich edged Leverkusen 5-3. No normal time or extra-time goals. Although Leverkusen provided a terrific effort against Bayern, they were unable to exorcise their demons from losing in their previous shootout against Atletico.

Queens Park Rangers vs Aston Villa (Premier League):

Although Yun didn’t feature, the game ended as a 3-3 thriller. Benteke successfully tied his side at the 83 minute.

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors vs Becamex Binh Duong (Asian Champions League):

Ends in a disappointing 1-1 D. Should have been a golazo fest by Jeonbuk. Lone goal provided by Enio Oliveira Junior (31).

Suwon Samsung FC vs Brisbane Roars (Asian Champions League):

The game ends as a 3-1 W for Suwon, a 2nd half surge providing Suwon with a convincing win. Goals provided by Chang-Hoon Kwon (52), Jung-Jin Seo (61), and Yeom Ki-Hun (67). Great result BUT POOR attendance by Suwon support, only 6,771 showing up.

Tavern Owner interrupting> Meanwhile, while attendance is once again lagging for Korean hosted ACL matches, this is what happened in Tehran…

AND This just in from Tuesday’s Western Sydney v FC Seoul ACL clash that ended as a 1-1 draw:

In stoppage time, a Lee Woong-hee strike appeared to have been caught by Sydney’s Covic behind the goal line but was ruled by the refs as a save.

Post match, FC Seoul head coach Choi Yong-soo reviewed the photos and said it looked as though it crossed the goal line, but would leave it to AFC officials to render a final judgement.

“The missed call came at a crucial juncture that could have a bearing on securing a spot in the round of 16, and we expressed deep concerns with the AFC…we also asked the AFC to prevent the recurrence of similar cases and to adopt the goal-line technology to ensure the development of Asian football.”

-FC Seoul

So overall Korean clubs in this ACL round notch 3 draws and a solid win. Here are the clubs in their respective group standings:

The next ACL fixtures will be held midweek April 21-22

Urawa Red v Suwon April 21

FC Seoul v Guangzhou Evergrande April 21

Seongnam v Buriram April 22

Kashiwa Reysol v Jeonbuk  April 22

In Lady Taeguk Warrior news, they just finished 2 sets of friendlies against Russia on home soil. The result?  The Ladies took both games, winning Sunday 1-0 with Ji So-Yun scoring in thrilling fashion in stoppage time, knocking in a rebound that came off the post!  They followed that up on Wednesday by improving on the previous result, winning 2-0, Cho So-Yun shot from the edge of the area in the first half was matched by a combination of Park Eun-Sun finding Ji So-Yun in the 51st minute, Ji’s strike doubled the lead.  Wednesday marked the first time both Ji So-Yun and Park Eun-Sun played on the same pitch in international competition on home soil (they’ve played an overseas match previously and would’ve been paired on Sunday but Park was recovering from a minor injury).  Some better form as Korea continues to tune up for the Women’s World Cup in June.

In the US, tickets have gone on sale for the USWNT vs Lady Taeguk Warriors at Red Bull Arena NJ, one of the last tuneup matches before the World Cup kicks off. This guy apparently is psyched to get his tickets:

News:

A possible friendly between the KNT and Cameroon on May 26th but yet to be confirmed by the KFA.

Stay tuned…

Extra time:

Tavern Owner intruding again, I’ve been enjoying these 2 podcasts, well the first is actually a vlog to be precise, these 2 from the K-League Report have been going to different matches in Korea and giving a neat first hand account. This last episode which they’ve finished editing, shows them at Seoul E-Land’s inaugural match vs Anyang FC. They even got to ask Martin Rennie a question, probably the only question he received in English.

meanwhile these Scottish expats in Korea have been getting together on Mondays to record a fun podcast on their musing about the K League and other hanguk chugu happenings. Here’s their latest episode:
