Midweek Roundup: Chungy freed, Ki concussed **

All three of our England based Korean Players Abroad* started for their respective clubs in midweek clashes. Let’s see how they did.

*A prayer for Yun Sukyoung who may or may not be alive at QPR

** UPDATE: Ball touch videos have been posted! Check out how well Chungy did below:

Son Heungmin Spurs

Son Heungmin started for Spurs in a 3-0 win for them over Norwich City. Harry Kane had a brace and Dele Alli opened the scoring. Son played relatively centrally, and had three shots in the first half, all of which were off target. Son had little influence on the game, according to Opta Stats Zone, perhaps because a mere 20% of Spurs’ ball possession came through the middle, also because he attempted only 16 passes all match long. Nonetheless, Spurs rise to 3rd in the table with the win, sitting only 5 points back from league leaders Leicester and within striking distance of second player Manchester City. The team on a five game winning streak host Watford on the weekend.

Son obviously is #7.

LCY graphic coming soon!

Lee Chungyong started and played 68 minutes for Crystal Palace in a 1-2 home defeat against AFC Bournemouth. Palace went ahead through a Scott Dann goal off of a Zaha cross which Chungy helped set up! (video below), but conceded through goals by Marc Pugh and Benik Afobe. Lee played as the left midfielder and had an enormous impact on the match, as demonstrated by the Palace twitter:

He was brought off to some chagrin in the 68th minute:

And here’s the lovely backheel that lead to Palace’s goal.

Unfortunately, Palace are on a bit of a slide of late, this defeat meaning they slide into the bottom half of the table. Maybe a bit of Chungy is all they need?

Ki Sungyueng

Ki Sungyueng started for Swansea as they visited the Hawthorns against West Bromwich Albion. He was hauled off after 45 minutes following a violent clash of heads in the penalty box. The manager Francesco Guidolin reassured Swans supporters that it wasn’t a major problem: “He had a knock to the cheek – at the moment, he is well.” Ki did not go to hospital. Swansea blew a late lead with a 92nd minute from Rondon dashing their hopes of a victory to alleviate some strain on the Welsh club who is fighting to avoid slipping into the bottom three. In the short time he was on the pitch, Ki had an 88.6% completed pass rate, played 8 long passes and certainly played more forward passes than under Gary Monk last season. Hopefully he’ll be okay for the weekend, but a concussion is a concussion. Better safe than sorry.
